Auburndale saved its best performance for the last night of the regular season, and the Bloodhounds ran away from Winter Haven 48-13 in the Havendale rivalry on Friday night at home.

Winter Haven struck first when Tyberius O’Neil returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Auburndale answered quickly, and sophomore quarterback Teo Edwards gave the Bloodhounds the lead for good at 14-7 with a keeper early in the game.

From there, Edwards put on the best show in Polk County on Friday night. The Ledger reported that Edwards passed for 271 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards and two more touchdowns, accounting for 375 total yards and four scores in the win.

His receivers matched the night. Major McBath caught five passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, and Isaiah Johnson added three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. The ground game closed the door, as Jonas Metelus rushed for 86 yards and a score, Adrian Holloway rushed for 53 yards and a score, and Metelus finished the scoring with a 4 yard rushing touchdown that set the final at 48-13.

Adonis Cuyler added a kick return touchdown late in the game for Auburndale. On defense, Kris Williams and Tony Miller each came up with an interception, and Givencci Joseph recorded a sack.

Winter Haven’s second score came late in the third quarter, when Kamari Threatt found O’Neil for a 9 yard touchdown. By then the Bloodhounds were in full control of the rivalry game.

“A lot of ups and downs this season. I’m proud of how my kids came out to fight tonight,” Auburndale head coach Antonio Thomas told The Ledger.

Auburndale finishes the regular season at 5-5 after a year of swings in both directions, and the Bloodhounds polished their regional ranking points with the win. Winter Haven falls to 4-6, and both teams now wait on the final rankings and the playoff bracket release on November 6 to learn whether their seasons continue.

Palmetto took a two hour bus trip to Fort Myers on Friday night, October 30, fell behind early, and then took the game over. The Tigers beat Bishop Verot 36-13, winning their eighth straight game behind a huge night from senior running back Ashton Kelly and a defense that shut the Vikings out for the entire second half.

Bishop Verot struck first, scoring on its opening drive on a 16 yard touchdown pass from Hudson Peak to Ayden Gonzalez. Palmetto answered with a 39 yard field goal from Brandin Gallaway, and then the Vikings pushed their lead back out early in the second quarter on a short touchdown carry from Robi Duclona.

The game turned in about one minute. Jok Harris took a pass 45 yards to set up a quick touchdown carry from Kelly, and only 60 seconds later Kydarrion Clyburn returned an interception for a touchdown to give Palmetto a 16-13 lead. The Tigers never trailed again.

Kelly owned the second half. After the teams traded punts for most of the third quarter, he scored on an 11 yard carry late in the quarter to make it 23-13. Kemari Hands then came up with Palmetto’s second interception of the night, and a long Tigers drive ended with another short Kelly touchdown carry. After a quick Bishop Verot possession went nowhere, Kelly scored for the fourth time, barreling through three defenders at the goal line in the final minutes.

The Sarasota Herald Tribune reported that Kelly finished with 125 rushing yards and four touchdowns for Palmetto. Quarterback Matthew Hennessey completed five of his eleven passes for 103 yards, while Peak finished with 94 passing yards, one touchdown pass and two interceptions for Bishop Verot. The Herald Tribune also reported that Bishop Verot converted only two of its twelve third down chances, and that Palmetto won despite fifteen penalties for about 150 yards.

Palmetto improved to 8-1 with the win, while Bishop Verot fell to 6-3. MaxPreps lists Palmetto with a game at Winter Park on November 4 next, and both teams now look toward the playoffs.
