Darryl Scotti and Big Yard Deliver Late-Night Jazz Sophistication on ‘State Of Mind (Remix)’

Veteran songwriter, guitarist, and industry mainstay Darryl Scotti has returned with a striking, boundary-pushing reimagining of “State Of Mind,” the latest release from the collaborative project Darryl Scotti and Big Yard. Transforming the band’s 2024 original track into a cinematic, a cappella-driven masterpiece, “State Of Mind (Remix)” masterfully blends dense vocal harmonies, smooth jazz textures, and atmospheric Americana into a piece that feels both deeply intimate and remarkably expansive.

Best known as the founder of Big Yard and a former guitarist for the legendary, chart-topping 1960s pop-rock group Spiral Starecase, Scotti has spent decades crafting music rooted in empathetic storytelling and genuine emotional connection.

Across his recent, highly regarded Poets & Heroes era, Scotti and his changing cast of collaborators have fearlessly explored heavy, often ignored societal themes, including homelessness, mental health struggles, fractured domestic relationships, and deep social division. They have approached these subjects through richly detailed songwriting and genre-blurring arrangements.

With “State Of Mind (Remix),” the project takes an unexpected, highly experimental turn. The new version strips away the traditional sonic armor of a full band while simultaneously deepening the emotional core of the original composition.

Produced by Scotti’s longtime creative sounding board, Larry Antonino, and reimagined through an incredibly inventive arrangement by JB Craipeau, the remix entirely abandons conventional instrumentation. Instead, it relies on complex, textured vocal layers and subtle, mouth-generated rhythmic movements. The result is a smooth, late-night listening experience where sophisticated jazz undercurrents and spacious, church-like harmonies create a dreamlike atmosphere that lingers in the air long after the track fades out.

This relentless spirit of reinvention has become the central pillar of Big Yard’s creative identity. Rather than chasing fleeting TikTok trends or pandering to algorithm-driven streaming playlists, Scotti continues to focus on music that actively invites human reflection. Across his long career, his work has consistently balanced poetic, blue-collar lyricism with an undeniable warmth, frequently earning him artistic comparisons to the narrative depth of Bruce Springsteen and the hyper-sophisticated musicality of Steely Dan.

On this remix, those heavy foundational influences are filtered through an entirely fresh, minimalist lens:

The Groove: Restrained yet immersive, forcing the listener to focus on the spaces between the notes.

The Mood: Lonesome but deeply comforting, allowing the sheer physics of the human voice to become the emotional centrepiece.

Backed by the fluid collective chemistry of the Big Yard family, including pivotal contributions from key collaborators Larry Antonino and Joey Gutos, Scotti continues to prove that artistic reinvention does not require a band to abandon its substance. Instead, “State Of Mind (Remix)” serves as a case study in how a song can evolve into an entirely new genre classification while actually strengthening the message that made it resonate in the first place.

With its smooth a cappella textures, understated jazz sensibilities, and intensely reflective atmosphere, “State Of Mind (Remix)” offers another compelling chapter in Darryl Scotti and Big Yard’s ongoing exploration of music as a vehicle for connection, conversation, and collective healing.

How Dayton Ohio’s Raxz Turned Adversity Into Opportunity

Published

Every artist has a story, but few are as powerful as Raxz’s. The Dayton, Ohio native has faced challenges that could have stopped most people in their tracks. After serving an 11-year prison sentence and enduring the heartbreaking loss of both parents, he made a decision to rewrite his future through music.

A major turning point came when his mother left him a letter encouraging him to focus on his God-given talent. Her words became a source of strength and motivation, inspiring him to take his music career seriously and pursue the dreams he’d long put aside.

That dedication is paying off. Raxz has collaborated with respected artists such as Sally Sossa, Slatt Zy, and Trecinco, building a reputation for authenticity and determination. In 2022, he was recognized by XXL Magazine as an artist to watch, further validating his growing presence in the industry.

While success hasn’t come without setbacks, Raxz has remained committed to his vision. Whether battling self-doubt, maintaining consistency, or navigating the business side of music, he’s continued to push forward.

Now, he’s preparing for the release of City of Dragons, a project he describes as his most complete and hardest-hitting work to date. With production from Sauce Sinatra, Yung Steely, and members of 808 Mafia, expectations are high.

As his audience continues to grow, Raxz is proving that no matter where you’ve been, your story doesn’t have to define your future. Stream his new single “First Flight” below.
