DIIV Plug Into the Pop Machine on Fifth Album ‘ZIRP!’
DIIV have made their strangest move yet, and it might be their smartest. ZIRP!, the Brooklyn band’s fifth album, is out today, Friday, October 30, on Fantasy Recordings, and for the first time they handed the whole record to one producer: A.G. Cook, the PC Music founder behind Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek.
The title is an economics term, zero interest rate policy, the era of free money for corporations that frontman Zachary Cole Smith credits with building the tech giants that ran over everything in their path. The songs follow that thread through societal collapse, surveillance money and an economy rigged for the top, all wrapped in the lightest, poppiest music DIIV have ever made.
The pivot away from their shoegaze fog was previewed by four singles: album opener “The Fountain,” “Kid,” “Trillions” and “Dare Me,” which landed as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record. ZIRP! is the follow up to 2024’s Frog in Boiling Water, and it finds Smith, Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield and Ben Newman sounding like a band that rebuilt itself on purpose.
They announced the album the weird way, mailing fans business cards promising the future of alternative multimedia entertainment, complete with a QR code and a hotline number. A 47 date world tour follows. ZIRP! is streaming now on all platforms.
