Whether she’s preparing for a big match with morning yoga or making clutch saves in international competition, Keegan embodies the spirit of a true competitor with her eyes set firmly on a future in professional soccer.
What first got you interested in playing soccer?
Watching my older sister Mackenzie play. I grew up watching her and followed her journey all the way to Clemson.
How old were you when you started playing, and what do you remember about your first game?
I was 4 years old. I remember how much I loved scoring goals.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in soccer and why?
My sister. She’s overcome so much both in soccer and life, but she never let anything slow her down.
What position do you play, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I play goalkeeper. When I was younger, I split time between goalkeeper and center mid. I love the adrenaline rush I get from making big saves.
Describe your playing style in three words.
Creative, confident and unique.
What’s been your favorite memory on the field so far?
Playing in my first international game against England.
How do you prepare mentally and physically for a big game?
I usually do some visualization and practice yoga the morning of the game.
What’s your favorite soccer drill or practice routine?
Doing the same warm-up every day before practices and games. It helps me stay consistent and focused.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
I don’t.
What does a typical training week look like for you?
I train and lift every day during the week and usually take weekends off.
How do you stay motivated during tough times or after a tough loss?
I remind myself why I started playing in the first place.
Who is your favorite professional player and what do you admire about their game?
Phallon, the U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper. I admire her because her story is similar to mine—she wasn’t seen until later in her career, but she kept going.
What’s the best advice a coach has ever given you?
Don’t listen to people’s opinions unless they’ve walked in your shoes.
What’s one skill or aspect of your game you’re currently working to improve?
I’m working on using my left foot more effectively.
How do you balance soccer with school, work, or other commitments?
I keep a calendar during the week to stay organized and on top of everything.
What’s your proudest accomplishment in your soccer journey so far?
Overcoming every obstacle—whether it was an injury or mental health struggles—without ever giving up or forgetting who I am.
Have you ever had a setback or injury, and how did you overcome it?
Yes. I went to therapy and made it a point to strengthen my mind.
What does being part of a team mean to you?
It means being unselfish. Success comes from a strong, unified team, so putting them first is everything.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that motivates you?
“This too shall pass.”
What do you like to do when you’re not playing soccer?
I love going hiking.
What’s your go-to snack or meal after a match?
Chick-fil-A.
If you could play a match anywhere in the world, where would it be?
At the San Diego Wave stadium.
Where do you see your soccer journey taking you in the next few years?
Hopefully to the professional level.
What advice would you give to younger players just starting out?
Take it one day at a time. Not everything comes to you right away.
