NFC South in Week 8: Falcons Can Take First Place Alone With a Win at Tampa Bay

A Tampa Bay Buccaneers player runs onto the field at Raymond James Stadium through smoke and flags.

Nobody in the NFC South has a winning record, and that is exactly what makes Sunday in Tampa so big. First place is sitting there waiting for somebody to take it.

The standings: Atlanta Falcons 3-4, Carolina Panthers 3-4, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-5, New Orleans Saints 2-5.

Atlanta at Tampa Bay kicks off at 1:00 PM ET at Raymond James Stadium, the 66th meeting between the two, and the series could not be closer: the Falcons lead it 33-32, and each of the last six meetings was decided by six points or fewer. Carolina already lost at Green Bay on Thursday night, so the math is simple. An Atlanta win means sole possession of first place in the NFC South.

The Falcons earned this shot. Last week they handed San Francisco its first loss of the season, 29-20, behind three touchdown passes from Michael Penix Jr., who was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week and has thrown nine touchdowns against one interception in his five starts. Running back Bijan Robinson leads the entire NFL in yards from scrimmage with 907 and in rushing yards with 704.

Tampa Bay is coming off its best game of the year, a 43-13 rout of Carolina built on 258 rushing yards, four takeaways and the return of Baker Mayfield at quarterback after three games out with a thumb injury. The Buccaneers are home, they are desperate, and in this series, desperate is usually dangerous.

New Orleans (2-5) has the week off. By Sunday evening, the NFC South will have a leader with its name on first place all alone, or a three-way mess at the top. Either way, it starts in Tampa.

NFC West in Week 8: 49ers Lead Big, Rams Host the Winless Chargers at SoFi Stadium

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford throws a pass.

The NFC West has a clear boss and a long weekend for everybody chasing them. San Francisco watches Week 8 from the couch with the division’s biggest lead.

The standings: San Francisco 49ers 6-1, Seattle Seahawks 4-3, Los Angeles Rams 3-4, Arizona Cardinals 2-5.

The 49ers, two games clear of Seattle, have the week off after taking their first loss of the season at Atlanta. Nobody in the division can touch them this weekend, so the race is for second place and wild card position.

The Rams host the Chargers at SoFi Stadium at 4:05 PM ET, the first regular season meeting between the two Los Angeles teams in their shared building since New Year’s Day 2023. The Rams (3-4) lead the NFL in total yards, and quarterback Matthew Stafford leads all passers with 1,989 yards. The Chargers (0-6) are the league’s last winless team, with the fewest points scored in football and the most turnovers, 15 of them. The Rams get back to .500 with a win, and Sean McVay’s team has spent all week saying it will not overlook a desperate opponent.

Arizona (2-5) visits the Dallas Cowboys (3-4) at 1:00 PM ET, and Seattle (4-3) closes the week on Monday night at home against the Chicago Bears (8:15 PM ET), a game with real wild card weight for both conferences.

San Francisco is in control. Week 8 decides who gets to call themselves the challenger.
