Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes and the Green Bay Packers held off a late Carolina rally for a 27-19 victory over the Panthers on Thursday Night Football at Lambeau Field to open Week 8.

Love finished 30 of 41 for 288 yards with touchdowns of 12 yards to Tucker Kraft, 24 yards to Matthew Golden and 4 yards to Josh Jacobs, who also scored on a 1-yard run. Christian Watson led all receivers with eight catches for 113 yards, and Golden added seven catches for 79 yards as Green Bay (5-3) outgained Carolina 354-258.

Watson provided the night’s biggest story. He left the field by ambulance in the second quarter to have a chest injury examined at a local hospital, was cleared, returned to Lambeau Field, and made a clutch 7-yard catch on third-and-2 with 2:33 remaining that let the Packers run the clock down to 22 seconds before Carolina got the ball back.

Green Bay led 27-10 midway through the third quarter, but the Panthers outgained the Packers 109-32 in the fourth quarter. Bryce Young threw for 209 yards and a touchdown, hitting Jalen Coker on a 26-yard score with 5:37 left to make it 27-19, but Young was sacked six times, the last by rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton with four seconds remaining. Chuba Hubbard ran for 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for Carolina (3-4), and Ryan Fitzgerald kicked field goals of 39 and 50 yards.

The Packers turned the ball over three times, including a fumbled opening kickoff, but Carolina managed only three points off those takeaways. Before kickoff, the Milwaukee Brewers were honored at Lambeau Field with their World Series trophy. Green Bay plays next at New England on Nov. 8.

Help Is Coming: Steelers’ Injured Reinforcements Nearing Return After the Bye

The Pittsburgh Steelers have spent the last month winning games with an incomplete roster. The cavalry is finally in sight.

Wide receiver Roman Wilson and defensive tackle Derrick Harmon are nearing the end of their required four-game stays on injured reserve, and Pittsburgh’s upcoming bye week falls at the perfect time to welcome them back. The Steelers play once more in Week 8 before the bye gives their returning players an extra week to get ready.

Pittsburgh has weathered the absences well, beating the teams it was supposed to beat, including the New Orleans Saints 16-10 in the NFL’s first game in Paris. But the holes have been real. At receiver, the Steelers lost Michael Pittman Jr. to injured reserve in Week 5 after he aggravated a foot injury, and Wilson went down with a finger injury in the second half of that same week and landed on IR as well. Rookie Germie Bernard has been asked to carry a bigger role behind DK Metcalf ever since.

Not every return is on schedule. Reports indicate there is a chance Pittman misses the rest of the season, and defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day’s return timeline remains unknown. But Wilson and Harmon would restore two rotation pieces at positions where Pittsburgh has been stretching its depth for a month.

Head coach Mike McCarthy likes where his roster stands as the reinforcements approach.

“We’ve got the right guys,” McCarthy said during his weekly press conference. “We’ve got a really great mix of veterans and young guys, and you’re just seeing it come together.”

The Steelers built their record without some of their best young players. If Wilson and Harmon come off the bye at full strength, the team that takes the field for the second half of the season will be deeper than the one that survived the first half.
