The most perfect season in Georgia flag football is perfect no more. Evans beat Groves 14-12 on Thursday in Evans, handing the Rebels their first loss after 14 straight wins to open the season.

Groves arrived at 14 wins and no losses with numbers that barely look real: 315 points scored against just seven allowed, with 13 shutouts in 14 games. Evans, at nine wins and six losses, refused to read the script. Evans threw for 122 yards in the win, while the Rebels managed 77 passing yards in the loss, and a defense that had allowed seven points all season finally met an offense that found the end zone twice.

Groves answered within hours. The Rebels beat Liberty County 26-6 behind 259 team passing yards to close the day at 15 wins and one loss. Evans split its own doubleheader, falling to Liberty County 12-7 in its second game of the day, which only underlines how hard Thursday was on everybody who played twice.

The Rebels still go as senior quarterback Tamiya Washington goes. On the season, Washington has thrown for 2,534 yards and 36 touchdowns while rushing for 667 yards and nine more scores, and the latest MaxPreps stat update credits her with 40 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions on the defensive side. One loss does not change who Groves is. It changes who Groves has to prove it against.

Groves plays at Statesboro on Nov. 3, carrying a perfect season’s worth of confidence and one fresh scar. Evans, the team that finally cracked the Rebels, hosts Jenkins the same day, one more ranked test before the GHSA state playoffs open Nov. 18. Thursday in Evans is the result the whole bracket will be talking about until then.

Every bracket has a draw nobody wants, and in Class 6A it belongs to James Clemens. The Jets travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. for a first round playoff game, a road trip confirmed on Hewitt-Trussville’s official athletics schedule.

James Clemens, from Madison, won six of its 14 games and closed the regular season the right way, with a 6-0 shutout win at Columbia on Oct. 27. The Jets’ wins include a 36-6 rout of Bob Jones, a 35-0 shutout of St. John Paul II, a 31-13 win over Mae Jemison on Oct. 20 and an 18-0 shutout of Hazel Green. The losses show the gap the Jets have to close. Gadsden City beat them 36-6 on Oct. 22, and Sparkman edged them 13-6 on Oct. 13.

Hewitt-Trussville is the standard on the other sideline. The Huskies are one of the powers of the 6A bracket, and the program’s flag account still points to the inaugural state title it won in 2021, before flag became an official AHSAA championship sport.

Three of the Jets’ six wins were shutouts, so the defense has traveled before. The game is also one of eight first round matchups in the Class 6A bracket, while eight other teams, including Spain Park and Smiths Station, sit out the week on byes and wait for the winners.

For James Clemens, the math is simple. The Jets have already shown they can pitch a shutout and score in bunches against their own level. Tuesday asks them to do it in the hardest building in the bracket.
