Salgado-Medina’s Late Kick After Onside Recovery Lifts No. 24 Arizona Past TCU 29-28
Michael Salgado-Medina kicked a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds left after Arizona recovered an onside pooch kick, and the No. 24 Wildcats stunned TCU 29-28 to keep their Big 12 title hopes alive.
Michael Salgado-Medina kicked a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds left after No. 24 Arizona recovered an onside pooch kick, and the Wildcats pulled out an improbable 29-28 victory over TCU on Friday night at Casino Del Sol Stadium.
Arizona (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) trailed 28-20 with 6:35 remaining after TCU quarterback Jaden Craig’s 2-yard touchdown run. Noah Fifita pulled the Wildcats within two on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Craig with 1:45 left, but the 2-point conversion attempt failed. Ian French then floated the ensuing kickoff over TCU’s front line, the Horned Frogs’ Ed Small could not hold the over-the-shoulder catch, and Arizona’s Zuri Watson recovered at the TCU 26. Four plays later, Salgado-Medina drilled the first game-winning field goal of his career, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 night, and Tyrese Boss intercepted Craig with 29 seconds left to seal it.
Fifita completed 24 of 37 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns and added a 9-yard touchdown run. Giovanni Richardson caught 11 passes for 171 yards, and Salgado-Medina also connected from 43 and 23 yards. Arizona totaled 441 yards of offense and won its seventh straight home game, its longest streak since 1993-94, to stay alive in the Big 12 championship race a week before hosting No. 3 Utah.
The Wildcats opened a 10-0 lead on Fifita’s diving 20-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Mizell and Salgado-Medina’s 43-yard field goal. TCU answered with Craig’s 7-yard touchdown scramble, and linebacker Hudson Hooper intercepted Fifita in the flat and returned it 93 yards for a touchdown with 4:09 left in the half, giving the Horned Frogs a 14-10 halftime lead. Arizona retook the lead on Fifita’s touchdown run in the third quarter, set up by Tre Smith’s block of a 50-yard field goal attempt, before Craig threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Dwyer and ran for the score that built the eight-point lead.
Craig finished 28 of 40 for 232 yards and a touchdown with two rushing scores for TCU (4-5, 2-4), which has lost a string of close games this season. Arizona played the finish shorthanded in the secondary, ending the game without four defensive backs.
“It was just magic the way that thing finished,” Arizona coach Brent Brennan said.

No. 22 New Mexico Wins First Game as a Ranked Team, Routs Nevada 31-3
Toa Fa’avae led two first-quarter touchdown drives, Scottre Humphrey ran for 107 yards and two scores, and No. 22 New Mexico won the first game in the AP poll in school history, beating Nevada 31-3.
Toa Fa’avae led two first-quarter touchdown drives and No. 22 New Mexico won the first game it has ever played as an AP Top 25 team, beating Nevada 31-3 on Friday night at Mackay Stadium.
The Lobos (8-1, 5-0 Mountain West), who entered the AP poll for the first time in program history this week, scored on their opening possession when Scottre Humphrey capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Kiefer Sibley added a 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead, and New Mexico was never threatened. Nevada’s only points came on Jacob Fernandez’s 32-yard field goal in the final minute of the first half.
Humphrey finished with 17 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns, adding a 1-yard score in the third quarter after Brett Karhu sacked Nevada quarterback AJ Bianco, forced a fumble and Darren Agu recovered at the Nevada 5. Fa’avae completed 14 of 20 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown and ran for 34 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cade Keith early in the fourth quarter. Nick Romero’s 37-yard field goal closed the scoring.
New Mexico’s defense, the nation’s top scoring unit, held Nevada (3-6, 2-3) to minus-9 rushing yards and 97 total yards, forced 10 punts and sacked Bianco four times. The Lobos held the ball for 38 minutes, 36 seconds and rushed for 213 yards as a team. It was also New Mexico’s first win in Reno in the series.
Bianco completed 14 of 31 passes for 106 yards for Nevada. New Mexico remains alone in first place in the Mountain West and hosts UNLV on Nov. 14, when Nevada plays at Northern Illinois.
