Tatum’s OT Buzzer-Beater Caps 40-Point Night as Celtics Edge Nets 125-124
Jayson Tatum buried a 17-foot jumper at the overtime buzzer to cap a 40-point night and give the Boston Celtics a 125-124 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night at TD Garden.
Tatum finished 10 of 20 from the field and made a career-high 18 free throws on 22 attempts. Paul George added 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Derrick White scored 16 for the Celtics (3-1), who won their third straight game.
Michael Porter Jr. had 27 points and 12 rebounds for Brooklyn (0-4), and Julius Randle scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Brooklyn led 31-26 after one quarter and 61-56 at halftime, but Boston made eight 3-pointers in the third quarter to take an 86-82 lead into the fourth. The Nets went ahead 109-104 on a basket by Randle with 2:57 left in regulation before the Celtics rallied, and Tatum found White for a tiebreaking dunk and free throw that put Boston up 114-111 with 33.7 seconds remaining.
After Mitchell Robinson missed two free throws with three seconds left, Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. made a tying 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Brown, the sixth pick in the draft out of Louisville, finished with 17 points. In overtime, Brown missed a layup with 2.3 seconds left, and Boston took possession trailing 124-123, setting up Tatum’s game-winner.
Neither team led by more than eight points all night. The Nets host Detroit on Friday night, and the Celtics host Chicago on Friday night.

NBA Fines Lakers’ Ziaire Williams $2,000 for Flopping Against Jazz
The NBA has fined Los Angeles Lakers forward Ziaire Williams $2,000 for flopping during Sunday’s 132-123 comeback win over the Utah Jazz, the league announced Monday.
The incident occurred with 4:44 remaining in the fourth quarter at Delta Center, with the Lakers trailing 114-113. Williams exaggerated contact from Jazz guard Keyonte George during George’s drive to the basket, and George was called for an offensive foul on the play. Upon league office review after the game, Williams was assessed the postgame flopping fine. Flopping is among the NBA’s Areas of Focus for the 2026-27 season.
Williams finished the game with 11 points. He is the first Lakers player fined this season and the third player assessed a postgame flopping fine in the first week of the season, joining Boston’s Paul George and Milwaukee’s Kasparas Jakucionis, who has been fined twice.
Asked about the ruling on Tuesday, Williams said he does not necessarily agree with it and that he has asked his agent to look into an appeal. “I’ll pay my fine and if I got to flop again to get a win, then that’s what I’ll do,” Williams said. “I thought it was a good defensive play.”
