North Gwinnett keeps turning region games into statements. The Bulldogs went to Duluth on Wednesday and won 47-0, their 13th win in 14 games this fall and the latest shutout in a season built on them.

The pattern is not new. North Gwinnett has already blanked Seckinger 27-0, Jackson County 26-0 and East Forsyth 26-0 this season, and beat Decatur 22-6. The Bulldogs’ only loss all fall came against another of the state’s top ten teams, and MaxPreps ranks North Gwinnett at No. 9 in Georgia. In Gwinnett County, the deepest county in the state for the sport, the Bulldogs have become the standard everyone else measures against.

Duluth, still searching for its first win at no wins and 15 losses, ran into the wrong opponent at the wrong time. A rebuilding team meeting a 13 and 1 buzzsaw in the final week of the regular season rarely ends any other way, and Wednesday followed the script from the opening drive.

The program behind the record is built to last. Suwanee Magazine has profiled North Gwinnett as the new standard for local girls sports, with 40 players spread across the junior varsity and varsity rosters and a pipeline that keeps the Bulldogs reloading instead of rebuilding.

North Gwinnett closes the regular season with a Nov. 2 doubleheader against Southwest DeKalb, nine wins and two losses, and Dacula. Then comes the real test. The GHSA state playoffs open Nov. 18, and a team that has allowed one loss and a pile of shutouts all fall looks built for a deep Division 5 run toward the state finals on Dec. 8 in Atlanta.

Every bracket has a draw nobody wants, and in Class 6A it belongs to James Clemens. The Jets travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. for a first round playoff game, a road trip confirmed on Hewitt-Trussville’s official athletics schedule.

James Clemens, from Madison, won six of its 14 games and closed the regular season the right way, with a 6-0 shutout win at Columbia on Oct. 27. The Jets’ wins include a 36-6 rout of Bob Jones, a 35-0 shutout of St. John Paul II, a 31-13 win over Mae Jemison on Oct. 20 and an 18-0 shutout of Hazel Green. The losses show the gap the Jets have to close. Gadsden City beat them 36-6 on Oct. 22, and Sparkman edged them 13-6 on Oct. 13.

Hewitt-Trussville is the standard on the other sideline. The Huskies are one of the powers of the 6A bracket, and the program’s flag account still points to the inaugural state title it won in 2021, before flag became an official AHSAA championship sport.

Three of the Jets’ six wins were shutouts, so the defense has traveled before. The game is also one of eight first round matchups in the Class 6A bracket, while eight other teams, including Spain Park and Smiths Station, sit out the week on byes and wait for the winners.

For James Clemens, the math is simple. The Jets have already shown they can pitch a shutout and score in bunches against their own level. Tuesday asks them to do it in the hardest building in the bracket.
