LeBron James Built an Empire Off the Court: Ownership Over Endorsements
Most star athletes rent out their name. LeBron James spent his career doing something different: he traded name value for ownership. That choice, repeated deal after deal, is what turned a basketball salary into a business empire.
Forbes reported in 2022 that James had become a billionaire while still playing, the first active NBA player to reach that mark. Forbes built that estimate piece by piece: a stake in his own media company, a stake in a global sports group, real estate, and a small pizza investment that grew far past its size. None of those pieces is a paycheck. All of them are property.
SpringHill: his own studio
The center of the empire is the SpringHill Company, the media and entertainment business James built with his longtime partner Maverick Carter. According to Forbes, SpringHill sold a minority stake in 2021 at a valuation of about $725 million, in a deal that brought in investors including Nike, Fenway Sports Group and Epic Games, while James and Carter kept control.
Forbes valued James’ own stake in SpringHill at $300 million in its 2022 breakdown. A valuation from selling a small piece of a company is not cash in a bank account. Still, the point stands: James was not hired to appear in someone else’s project. He owned the studio making the projects.
Fenway: a seat on the ownership side
James also owns a piece of Fenway Sports Group, the company behind the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Forbes valued his Fenway interest at $90 million in its 2022 breakdown.
The roots go back to Liverpool alone. ESPN’s Darren Rovell reported in 2018 that James’ roughly 2 percent stake in Liverpool, first valued at $6.5 million, had grown to $32 million as the club’s value rose. He later moved from holding a piece of one club to holding a piece of the group that owns several.
Blaze Pizza: the small bet that taught the lesson
The clearest early example was also the smallest. According to ESPN, James and his partners put in less than $1 million in Blaze Pizza when the made-to-order pizza chain was young. Forbes later estimated his stake at about $30 million. A small check became a large asset because he owned part of the company, not just a fee for standing next to its logo.
Nike: the lifetime deal
James signed his first Nike deal before he played an NBA game, and in 2015 Nike signed him to a lifetime deal. ESPN’s Darren Rovell reported at the time that it carried the largest single-athlete guarantee in the company’s history. In a 2016 interview with GQ, Carter was asked whether the deal was worth $1 billion and pointed one finger toward the sky, a gesture widely read as saying the figure was higher. The exact terms were never published, so the honest description is this: a lifetime agreement, reported to be worth more than $1 billion, with no public paperwork to check it against.
The method is simple to state and hard to copy: take equity instead of a fee when you can, and own the studio instead of only starring in the show. James’ teams paid him to play basketball. His ownership built the empire.

Kylie Jenner Launches Khy “After Dark,” a 16-Piece Winter Collection Inspired by L.A. Nights
Kylie Jenner’s fashion label Khy has its winter moment. The brand launched “Khy After Dark,” a 16-piece eveningwear collection, worldwide on Tuesday (October 27), sold exclusively through the brand’s own web store at khy.com.
The capsule is built for the hours after sunset. Khy describes the drop as inspired by Los Angeles after hours — “a love letter to L.A. nights” — and Jenner echoed the theme in her launch post: “LA nights have always been such a big part of my inspiration and i loved bringing that feeling into this collection.” The lineup leans into moody, after-dark glamour: sculpted tailoring, plush faux fur, layered knitwear, oversized bombers and animal-print accents across coats, dresses, cardigans and tops. The standout piece is the floor-sweeping Marmont Sculpted Coat. The campaign, photographed by Quentin de Briey in the Los Angeles hills, puts Jenner herself in the collection’s statement outerwear against the city lights.
After Dark also underlines how Khy does business. Rather than running on traditional celebrity endorsements, the label operates through designer collaborations, partnering with creative founders and peer brands — including footwear label Gia Borghini and Francesca Aiello’s Frankies Bikinis — to merge their aesthetics with Jenner’s vision. The winter drop keeps up a rapid release cadence: earlier this year Khy expanded into warm-weather staples with the silk-and-jersey “Dear Summer, Love Khy” line, then returned to swim with Frankies Bikinis on their second collaborative capsule, “Fever Dream.”
The timing is deliberate. The launch caps a headline week for Jenner, who made her runway debut at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on October 18 wearing the $50 million Jacob & Co. diamond Fantasy Bra — and now channels that fashion spotlight straight into her own label. Khy After Dark is available now at khy.com.
