Fears, Williamson Lead Pelicans to First Win, 132-120 Over Winless Kings
Jeremiah Fears flirted with his first career triple-double and the New Orleans Pelicans broke into the win column for the first time this season with a 132-120 victory over the visiting Sacramento Kings on Thursday night at Smoothie King Center.
Fears finished with 22 points, a career-high 13 assists and eight rebounds, adding four blocks and two steals for his fourth career double-double. Zion Williamson also scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, with every made shot coming in the paint, and recorded five steals. Trey Murphy III added 19 points, Herbert Jones scored 16, Karlo Matkovic had 12, and Saddiq Bey and Bennedict Mathurin scored 10 apiece.
Sacramento led 30-24 after one quarter, but New Orleans scored 39 points in each of the next two quarters and took a 63-61 halftime lead. The Kings pulled within 67-65 early in the third quarter before the Pelicans took command with a 21-4 run, and after Zach LaVine’s 3-pointer cut it to 113-106 with 7:11 left, New Orleans ran off the next 10 points.
Rookie Darius Acuff Jr. poured in a season-best 34 points for Sacramento (0-5), the first team in the league to lose five games this season. De’Andre Hunter and Precious Achiuwa had 24 points apiece and LaVine totaled 21, while Domantas Sabonis grabbed 15 rebounds but committed seven of the Kings’ 25 turnovers.
The Pelicans’ bench outscored Sacramento’s reserves 41-8 as New Orleans (1-4) won its first game under new head coach Jamahl Mosley despite missing Jordan Poole (ankle) and Dejounte Murray (birth of his child). New Orleans hosts Atlanta on Saturday, and Sacramento visits Memphis.
