In 2012, M.I.A. made a controversial appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show, during which she briefly flashed the middle finger. Afterward, she was embroiled in a legal battle with the NFL that culminated in the settlement of a lawsuit in 2014. (The terms were ultimately private, but reports at the time suggested the NFL, at one point, demanded upward of $16 million in damages.) M.I.A. has now reflected on the experience in a new interview with Daniel Dylan Wray for Huck magazine.
“If you’re talking about racism and sexism, that moment in my life showed the cracks in everyone I knew,” she said. “I was at Roc Nation at the time and JAY-Z was managing me. The lawsuit was so ridiculous, it proposed that they would keep one hundred percent of my earnings for the rest of my life if I ever earned more than $2 million dollars. JAY-Z was, like, ‘You should sign that shit’ and I was, like, ‘No.’” Read the full story at Huck.
Pitchfork has contacted M.I.A. and JAY-Z’s respective representatives for comment and more information.
