Soccer Wins Sixth Straight with Another Shutout

Published

Senior forward Tatum Porter provided the first-half fireworks and the Hawai'i women's soccer team delivered another stellar defensive performance, earning a 1-0 victory over Grand Canyon Saturday at the UH Lower Campus Field.

The victory extended the Rainbow Wahine's winning streak to six consecutive matches, marked their third straight shutout, and tied the program record for the second-longest conference win streak in school history. With the win, UH remained in second place alone with 18 points heading into the final three matches.

Hawai'i (9-4-1, 6-1-0 MW) took control of the contest midway through the opening period. After a few early offensive opportunities, the breakthrough arrived at the 21:57 mark when Porter hit a bending corner kick that went off of GCU keeper Emma Knack and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The 'Bows out-shot the Lopes 7-3 in the first 45 minutes while earning four corner kicks and holding Grand Canyon (7-5-4, 3-3-1 MW) without a single shot on target before the intermission. The Rainbow Wahine continued to push in the second half, generating dangerous looks from freshman forward Olivia Dianda —who fired three shots with one on frame—along with secondary efforts from Bertani and Karissa Kira.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Kennedy Justin and the Hawai'i backline neutralized the Lopes' attack. Justin made her signature save of the night in the 67th minute, getting a fingertip on a strike from GCU's Amanda Adams to preserve the clean sheet.

Hawai'i finished the evening out-shooting Grand Canyon 12-7 overall (5-1 on target) and controlled an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Justin, defender Alohi Ramos, midfielder Izzy Ayala, and Bertani each played the full 90 minutes to anchor the team's third consecutive shutout victory.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their homestand with a matchup against UNLV on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Lamar Jackson Expected to Return for Ravens’ Showdown With Bills

The Baltimore Ravens are on track to get their franchise quarterback back for one of the biggest games on the Week 8 schedule.

Lamar Jackson is expected to play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday. Jackson has been sidelined since injuring his ankle in Week 4, a high-ankle sprain suffered on Oct. 4 that forced him to miss multiple games in October.

Jackson addressed his recovery this week for the first time since the injury, describing the sprain as a “very, very, very, very, very painful” one, per ESPN. He is officially listed as questionable, but the expectation inside the week is that he will be under center when the Ravens travel to Buffalo.

Baltimore has felt his absence. The Ravens (4-3) have dropped two straight, including a 35-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 25, and backup Tyler Huntley has started in Jackson’s place during the skid. Baltimore currently sits ninth in the AFC, outside the early playoff picture, a position that makes every conference game from here forward carry extra weight.

Jackson’s return changes the math for the entire offense. Wide receiver Zay Flowers, who has been among the league’s most efficient receivers this season, gets his quarterback back, and a rushing attack that has leaned on contingency plans gets its most dangerous runner restored to the lineup.

The Bills, coming off their bye, present a difficult first test back. But for a Ravens team that has watched its margin for error shrink over the last two weeks, simply having No. 8 back on the field is the biggest development of their season so far.
