Tony Iommi Releases ‘From the Dark,’ His First Solo Album in 21 Years
The godfather of heavy metal is not finished. Tony Iommi released From the Dark on Friday, October 23, through BMG — the Black Sabbath founder’s first solo album in 21 years, since 2005’s Fused, and his first full-length since Sabbath’s 13.
The eight-track album is built around one voice. Norwegian singer Jorn Lande sings throughout and co-wrote every song, backed by Becky Baldwin on bass and Karl Brazil on drums. Iommi co-produced the record with Mike Exeter, shaping it slowly at his home studio. As he told WMMR, there was “no pressure… no tour deadline” — the album took exactly as long as it wanted to take.
The first single, “World Alone,” arrived in July, and the guest list holds one more giant: Queen’s Brian May contributes a guitar solo to “Death Wake,” putting two of British rock’s most influential guitarists on the same track.
Timing gives the release its weight. From the Dark arrives a year after Black Sabbath’s final-ever show, the “Back to the Beginning” concert in Birmingham — the end of the band Iommi founded more than five decades ago.
That chapter is closed. From the Dark is the sound of its author writing a new one, on his own schedule and his own terms.
For metal fans, the arithmetic is staggering: the man who down-tuned his guitar in a Birmingham factory town and accidentally invented a genre is still writing riffs worth arguing about in 2026. With Jorn Lande carrying the melodies and Brian May trading sparks on “Death Wake,” From the Dark plays less like a legacy exercise and more like a working record from a working band — which, at this point in Iommi’s life, may be the most metal thing about it.

Due to overwhelming demand, GRAMMY Award-winning rock band System Of A Down have added a fourth and final show at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, CA. The newly added Saturday, June 12, 2027 performance joins the previously announced June 5, June 6, and June 10 shows, expanding the band’s 2027 Rose Bowl run to four nights.
