Will Foulke Reimagines the Blues In Debut Album ‘Charleston Blues’

Published

on

Will Foulke’s debut album, Charleston Blues, is more than a collection of songs—it’s a love letter to the history of blues and a reflection on the personal journey of a young artist finding his voice. Drawing from the emotional depth of Otis Redding, the melodic sophistication of Jeff Lynne, and the introspective style of Brian Wilson, Foulke blends genres and eras, crafting a sound that feels familiar yet entirely his own.

The album opens with a psychedelic flourish, gradually moving through heartfelt ballads and rhythmic explorations. “One Notch” combines jazzy piano lines with slide guitar, while “Cold and Blue” channels the melancholy of Eric Clapton’s blues. The closing track, “Out To You,” offers lush harmonies and a tribute to Brian Wilson, bringing the album to a contemplative, warm finish. Foulke’s decision to perform every vocal and instrumental part himself adds a level of authenticity rarely seen on modern records.

Critics and fans alike have responded to Charleston Blues for its emotional resonance and storytelling. The album captures both the struggles and joys of life, allowing listeners to connect with its narratives in an intimate way. By rooting his work in blues tradition while embracing contemporary production techniques, Foulke bridges the past and present with ease.

Foulke said on the release, “This record is a tribute to the blues and the musicians who made the genre what it is today. Each song reflects a piece of that legacy”.

As the music community takes notice, Charleston Blues could signal a resurgence of interest in thoughtful, genre-spanning songwriting. For Foulke, the release is both an artistic milestone and a starting point for further exploration, offering a blueprint for how emerging artists can honor their influences while forging their own path.
