College Football Roundup: Boise State Survives a Wild One, Seven Ranked Teams Fall as Playoff Picture Sharpens
Backup quarterback Max Cutforth threw three touchdown passes in the final seven minutes as No. 20 Boise State rallied to beat Texas State 46-45 on Saturday night, capping a Week 9 Saturday that saw seven ranked teams lose and the College Football Playoff picture come into focus ahead of Tuesday’s first rankings.
Boise State (7-1, 4-0 Pac-12) led 28-3 at halftime before Texas State scored 36 straight points to take a 39-28 lead, aided by Jayden Bradley’s return of Maddux Madsen’s first interception of the season for a touchdown. Madsen, who threw for 236 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores, left in the fourth quarter with a left knee injury and watched from crutches as Cutforth finished 8 of 13 for 131 yards and three touchdowns, the last an 18-yarder to Akeem Wright with 2:40 left. Brad Jackson threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns for Texas State (4-4, 2-2), which has never beaten a ranked team in 13 tries since moving up to the FBS in 2012. The win keeps Boise State in front for the playoff spot reserved for the highest-ranked Group of Six champion.
Iowa State outlasted No. 24 Oklahoma State 51-49 in a shootout, and Colorado beat Kansas State 27-24 in overtime in Boulder, Deion Sanders’ first Big 12 win in more than a calendar year, with fans storming the field. Michigan held off Rutgers 28-21 behind quarterback Tommy Carr, who played through the flu in his second career start and led a 92-yard touchdown drive to open the game. Illinois edged Maryland 20-17 on Ethan Moczulski’s 26-yard field goal as time expired, NC State beat California 31-10 in its first game under interim coach Todd Goebbel, and Missouri handled Arkansas 34-10 as running back Ahmad Hardy returned with three carries for 42 yards in his first game since he was shot in May.
Elsewhere in the Top 25 on Saturday: USC stunned No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 at the Coliseum, No. 3 Georgia routed No. 17 Florida 27-8 in Atlanta, No. 1 Miami escaped North Carolina 38-35, No. 4 Indiana survived Minnesota 23-16 in overtime, No. 6 Utah stayed perfect with a 49-25 win at Cincinnati behind three Devon Dampier touchdown passes and two defensive scores, Notre Dame beat Navy 35-13, UCLA blanked Nevada 27-0, BYU held off Arizona State 27-20, Texas routed Mississippi State 31-3, Ole Miss rolled Auburn 45-15, Wake Forest buried Virginia 51-7, Texas Tech held off Arizona 34-26, Iowa shut out Wisconsin 30-0, Syracuse stunned SMU 30-27, Oregon rallied past Northwestern 34-26 and South Carolina routed Oklahoma 42-25 in Norman behind five total touchdowns from LaNorris Sellers.
Three unbeaten teams remain: Miami (8-0), Utah (8-0) and UCLA (8-0), and none of them has played a team currently in the Coaches Poll top 18. Ohio State’s second loss and Florida’s third reshaped the race behind them, USC (7-2) played its way back into the playoff conversation with the biggest win of Lincoln Riley’s tenure, and Georgia (7-1) sits atop the SEC as the conference’s last one-loss team. Notre Dame’s win came at a cost: captain linebacker Drayk Bowen suffered a significant ankle injury against Navy and is expected to miss extended time, likely the rest of the regular season, with No. 1 Miami visiting South Bend next Saturday. The first College Football Playoff rankings of the season will be released Tuesday night.
