No. 1 Miami stayed perfect on Saturday night, escaping North Carolina 38-35 at Kenan Stadium in a game that swung back and forth all night.

Mark Fletcher Jr. was the story. He ran for two touchdowns and caught a 31 yard touchdown pass, and his second quarter receiving score was the 36th total touchdown of his career, a new Miami record. Malachi Toney caught seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns, including the 9 yarder with 2:37 left that gave Miami its breathing room. Darian Mensah threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

North Carolina would not go away. Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to tight end Jelani Thurman, and the Tar Heels led twice in the second half. They pulled within 38-35 with 1:42 left, but Miami recovered the onside kick after a wild sequence of penalties and ran out the clock.

The game’s only turnover made the difference. Miami strip sacked Edwards in the fourth quarter and punched in the go ahead score moments later. Miami improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the ACC, while North Carolina fell to 4-4.
