USC scored 39 seconds into the game and never trailed, stunning No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 on Saturday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Jayden Maiava hit freshman Trent Mosley on a 69 yard screen for a touchdown on the game’s first series, and Mosley finished with five catches for 101 yards. The turning point came in the third quarter. Ohio State drove deep, fumbled it away, and three plays later Maiava found tight end Mark Bowman for 70 yards to the doorstep, setting up King Miller’s short touchdown run and a 27-9 lead.

Ohio State outgained USC 464-338 and held the ball for nearly 40 minutes, but the Buckeyes scored one touchdown all night. True freshman Luke Fahey, starting his first career game for the injured Julian Sayin, threw for 260 yards and found Jeremiah Smith for a late touchdown, but kicker Connor Hawkins did most of Ohio State’s scoring with four field goals. USC’s Caden Chittenden added a late field goal to seal it at 30-18.

USC improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. Ohio State fell to 6-2 with its first conference loss.
