For ten days every November, the country comes to the city. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair returns to Exhibition Place in Toronto from Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 15, celebrating its 104th edition. First held in 1922, the Royal is the largest combined indoor agricultural fair and international equestrian competition in the world, filling the Enercare Centre and the Coca-Cola Coliseum with livestock, food and sport.

The marquee attraction is the Royal Horse Show, billed as the top indoor equestrian event in North America. Opening night on Friday, November 6 pairs show jumping with the Mad Barn Indoor Eventing Challenge and the first round of the Henry Equestrian Canadian Show Jumping Championship, along with an opening ceremony celebrating the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Fire Horse. One night later, Red and White Night on Saturday, November 7 brings the eventing final and the deciding round of the Canadian championship, when a new national champion will be crowned.

The second week belongs to the internationals. The Mad Barn CDI W Dressage Freestyle Final headlines Tuesday, November 10, a night when horse and rider perform to choreographed music. The Mad Barn Big Ben Challenge follows on Thursday, November 12, and a brand new competition, the Royal Winning Round, tops the bill on Friday, November 13, sending the top ten qualifiers back into the ring on a level playing field to chase the biggest share of the purse.

The biggest night of all lands on Saturday, November 14 at 7 p.m. The Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Toronto, presented by Ecclestone Horse Transport, brings twenty four of the top show jumping athletes in the world into the Coliseum to compete for the richest purse at the Royal. It is the night the whole fair builds toward.

The fair closes in Western style. Sunday, November 15 is Western Day, with the Royal Rodeo Championship qualifier at noon and the Royal Rodeo Championship Finals at 3 p.m., presented by Ontario Ford Dealers. Bull riding, saddle and bareback bronc riding, barrel racing and pole bending make this the only rodeo of the year in Toronto, with Heartland star Amber Marshall guest emceeing and the Canadian Cowgirls providing featured entertainment.

Beyond the main ring, the Horse Palace hosts breed classes, from Percherons and Belgians on opening day to Clydesdales, Hackneys and Welsh ponies, while six horse hitches, mini chuck wagon races and the Chef’s Table dining series round out the program. We Speak Media will be watching across all ten days, from the crowning of a Canadian show jumping champion to World Cup night and a rodeo Sunday that turns a downtown arena into the West.
