Georgia Girls Flag Football’s Stretch Run: Greenbrier Stands Alone After Shutting Out Grovetown
Greenbrier did not just beat Grovetown on Thursday night. It beat the only other team in Georgia that could match its record, and it did so without giving up a point.
The Wolfpack’s 18-0 win over Grovetown on Nov. 5 settled a meeting of two 15-0 teams — and it left Greenbrier as the state’s most imposing unbeaten. Greenbrier is now 17-0, while Grovetown is 16-1, and the gap between the Wolfpack and the rest of Georgia suddenly looks wider than it did a week ago.
The big results
Addisen Odom set the tone late in the first half, throwing a touchdown pass to freshman Palmer Pangle on the last play before halftime. Greenbrier added two second-half scores after the break, and sophomore Kate McDonald had two interceptions for the Wolfpack. Through 17 games, Greenbrier has outscored its opponents 430 to 59, according to the Augusta Chronicle.
Milton made its own statement three nights earlier, on Monday, Nov. 2 — twice in one night. The Eagles shut out McEachern 18-0, handing McEachern its first loss of the season, and then beat Heard County 14-0 the same night. Heard County had entered the night 14-0 and lost twice. Milton is now 16-1, with 10 shutouts in 17 games and only 69 points allowed all season, according to MaxPreps.
Milton’s night also carried a concern: standout Caroline Marshall was injured on Nov. 2, and no return timetable has been reported.
Odom’s season line through Nov. 2 stands at 2,294 passing yards, 37 touchdown passes and just one interception, according to MaxPreps. Her top targets, Jayla Ayler and Palmer Pangle, have 11 receiving touchdowns each.
The top of the state
Greenbrier, Milton (16-1), McEachern (13-1), Pope (13-1) and North Oconee (15-1) lead the state in the TAYP Georgia Top 25 poll. Nationally, USA TODAY’s Super 25 lists Greenbrier at No. 3, Milton at No. 7 and McEachern at No. 10. Still unbeaten in Georgia are Greenbrier (17-0), Habersham Central (15-0) and Telfair County (14-0).
That depth is clearest in Division 4, which holds Greenbrier, Grovetown, Pope and Milton. Division 5 runs through McEachern, Division 3’s defending champion is North Oconee, Division 2 is led by Columbus (12-1), and Division 1 includes Heard County (14-2) and unbeaten Telfair County.
One matchup Georgia will not get, however, is a rematch of last year’s Division 5 final. Pope against McEachern was rained out on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with no makeup date announced, and the two schools are in different divisions this year — Pope in Division 4 and McEachern in Division 5 — so no playoff rematch is possible.
The road to Mercedes-Benz Stadium
The regular season ends Saturday, November 14. Area play through November 14 decides the 32-team field in each division, and the top eight seeds host the first and second round pods.
The first and second rounds are both played Wednesday, November 18, in four-team pods hosted by the top eight seeds. The quarterfinals are Tuesday, December 1, the semifinals are Thursday, December 3, and all five division finals are Tuesday, December 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
That calendar turns the final week of the regular season into a race for seeding as much as for wins. Greenbrier has already made the loudest statement of the stretch run, Milton has shown it can win twice in a night and defend as well as anyone in the state, and the unbeaten teams still standing — Greenbrier, Habersham Central and Telfair County — know that one loss now would change their path to Atlanta. The next month will decide who gets there.

James Clemens Gets the Hardest Draw in 6A: A Playoff Trip to Hewitt-Trussville
Every bracket has a draw nobody wants, and in Class 6A it belongs to James Clemens. The Jets travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. for a first round playoff game, a road trip confirmed on Hewitt-Trussville’s official athletics schedule.
James Clemens, from Madison, won six of its 14 games and closed the regular season the right way, with a 6-0 shutout win at Columbia on Oct. 27. The Jets’ wins include a 36-6 rout of Bob Jones, a 35-0 shutout of St. John Paul II, a 31-13 win over Mae Jemison on Oct. 20 and an 18-0 shutout of Hazel Green. The losses show the gap the Jets have to close. Gadsden City beat them 36-6 on Oct. 22, and Sparkman edged them 13-6 on Oct. 13.
Hewitt-Trussville is the standard on the other sideline. The Huskies are one of the powers of the 6A bracket, and the program’s flag account still points to the inaugural state title it won in 2021, before flag became an official AHSAA championship sport.
Three of the Jets’ six wins were shutouts, so the defense has traveled before. The game is also one of eight first round matchups in the Class 6A bracket, while eight other teams, including Spain Park and Smiths Station, sit out the week on byes and wait for the winners.
For James Clemens, the math is simple. The Jets have already shown they can pitch a shutout and score in bunches against their own level. Tuesday asks them to do it in the hardest building in the bracket.
