Chambliss Takes Over in the Second Half as No. 12 Ole Miss Pulls Away From Auburn, 45-15
Ole Miss saved its best football for the second half on Saturday.
Trinidad Chambliss accounted for three touchdowns as No. 12 Ole Miss pulled away from Auburn for a 45-15 win at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the Rebels’ 16th straight home victory.
It was a fight early. After a scoreless first quarter, 315-pound defensive tackle Will Echoles opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run. Auburn answered on Byrum Brown’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Chas Nimrod, but the extra point was blocked, and Shekai Mills-Knight’s 1-yard score sent Ole Miss to halftime up 14-9.
Auburn pulled within 17-15 in the third quarter on Brown’s 7-yard touchdown run, but the two-point try failed, and Chambliss took the game over. His 26-yard touchdown run late in the third made it 24-15, and the Rebels poured in 28 unanswered points on Chambliss touchdown passes to Caleb Cunningham and Horatio Fields and a 17-yard scoring run from backup quarterback Deuce Knight against his former team.
Chambliss finished 22 of 34 for 263 yards and two touchdowns through the air and added 65 rushing yards and a score on the ground. He passed 6,000 career passing yards at Ole Miss and threw a touchdown pass for the 21st straight game, one short of the school record.
Mills-Knight ran for a career-high 71 yards and a touchdown with star back Kewan Lacy out with a separated shoulder. Fields caught six passes for 73 yards and a touchdown, and Cunningham added six catches for 55 yards and a score.
Brown threw for 195 yards and a touchdown for Auburn, but the Tigers’ ground game was shut down, held to 63 rushing yards as a team, and Ole Miss recorded four sacks and a season-high 10 tackles for loss.
Ole Miss improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SEC. Auburn falls to 4-4 and 2-4 in league play.
