BYU wide receiver Kyler Kasper is lifted in celebration by teammates after his 13-yard touchdown catch against Arizona State in Provo

BYU built a 17-3 halftime lead, watched Arizona State erase all of it, and still found the answer drive when it mattered, holding off the Sun Devils 27-20 in Provo on Saturday.

The game’s defining play came in the first quarter. At the goal line, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier fumbled, and after two official reviews, running back Sione Moa was credited with a fumble-recovery touchdown. FOX’s rules analyst disagreed with the call on air, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham was furious, and in the end that touchdown was the margin of victory.

Bachmeier finished 19 of 29 for 236 yards and a touchdown to Kyler Kasper, who caught four passes for 57 yards. Legend Glasker led BYU with 87 receiving yards. Moa scored twice, adding a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:12 left at the end of an 11-play, 82-yard drive that answered Arizona State’s comeback.

Arizona State freshman Jake Fette, making his first career start, threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to tie the game 17-17 after trailing by 14 at the half. Fette finished 22 of 42 for 166 yards with no interceptions while taking six sacks. Cardae Mack ran 23 times for 123 yards for the Sun Devils.

BYU improves to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12. Arizona State falls to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
