Halloween Heist at the Dome: Syracuse Stuns Ranked SMU 30-27 on a Touchdown With 17 Seconds Left
Syracuse saved its biggest win of the season for Halloween.
Steve Angeli hit Noah Meyers on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left, capping an 11-play, 68-yard drive and lifting Syracuse to a 30-27 upset of SMU on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome. It is the Orange’s first win over a ranked team since November 2024.
It took a comeback inside a comeback. Syracuse led 20-10 at halftime behind a 26-yard Angeli touchdown run, two Tripp Woody field goals and Ahmad Miller’s 1-yard touchdown run. SMU clawed back: Kevin Jennings found Yamir Knight for a touchdown, an intentional grounding call in the end zone gave SMU a safety, and Kendrick Raphael’s touchdown run plus a two-point conversion put the Mustangs up 27-20 with 9:04 to play.
Syracuse answered with Woody’s third field goal, got the ball back with 3:36 left, and drove it home. Angeli went 7 of 8 on the final drive, and Meyers, a little-used tight end, caught the first touchdown of his Syracuse career for the win. SMU’s last play ended in a fumble on a lateral, recovered by Chase Geter.
Angeli finished 21 of 34 for 200 yards and a touchdown passing with a rushing touchdown. Miller ran for 56 yards and a score, and Umari Hatcher caught six passes for 65 yards.
Jennings threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns for SMU and passed 10,000 career passing yards in the game, but he was sacked four times and the Mustangs were held to 70 rushing yards. Syracuse won the turnover battle 2-0 despite being outgained 421-338.
Syracuse improves to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. SMU falls to 6-2 and 4-2 in league play.

Sellers Accounts for Five Touchdowns as South Carolina Routs Oklahoma 42-25 in Norman
LaNorris Sellers put on a show in Norman. The South Carolina quarterback threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 96 yards and two more scores as the Gamecocks routed Oklahoma 42-25 on Saturday, their third straight win.
Sellers opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run. Oklahoma’s only first-half life was a Kip Lewis 30-yard pick-six that tied it 7-7 early in the second quarter, and South Carolina answered immediately: Christian Clark’s short touchdown run, then Sellers hit DJ Black for an 84-yard touchdown on third-and-12 and Nyck Harbor for an 8-yard score with 16 seconds left in the half. Oklahoma’s offense managed just 71 total yards before halftime.
Sellers’ 11-yard rushing touchdown made it 35-10 in the third quarter, and after Oklahoma finally scored on offense, he answered with a 79-yard touchdown strike to Mazeo Bennett Jr. early in the fourth quarter. Bennett finished with four catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Oklahoma scored twice late against the reserves, John Mateer finding Ivan Carreon for touchdowns of 34 and 10 yards, the first two scoring catches of Carreon’s career, but the Sooners’ last drive died on downs at the South Carolina 1-yard line. South Carolina outgained Oklahoma 521 yards to 359 and won despite throwing three interceptions.
South Carolina improves to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the SEC. Oklahoma falls to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
