Garret T Willie Releases Album “Bill’s Cafe”

Garret T. Willie doesn’t waste time on this one. From the first track, you can tell he’s not chasing a sound that’s already been done a hundred times by a hundred other guys with guitars. He’s telling his own story, and it shows in every line.

The 25 year old from Alert Bay, British Columbia already had people paying attention after his debut, Same Pain, picked up BBC Radio 2 spins and cracked the Top 20 in both the UK and US. That’s not a small feat for a young guy from a town most people couldn’t find on a map. He’s shared stages with Joe Bonamassa, John Fogerty, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, so the credentials were already there. But Bill’s Café feels like the record where he stops proving himself and starts just being himself.

The title comes from his grandfather’s old pool hall café back in Alert Bay, and once you know that, the whole record makes more sense. This isn’t just a blues rock album with some guitar solos thrown in for good measure. It’s a family album. It’s got roots in it. You hear pieces of his Indigenous heritage woven through the songwriting, not as a gimmick, but as something that just naturally lives inside the music because it lives inside him.

He went down to Nashville to record with Tom Hambridge, a producer who knows his way around a Grammy, and the partnership works. Hambridge doesn’t try to smooth out Willie’s edges. The vocals still growl when they need to growl. The guitar still bites. Nothing here feels polished into blandness, which is the trap so many of these collaborations fall into.

There’s a story behind a few of these songs too, tied to a trip Willie took to the Johnny Cash Museum, where something clicked for him about the outlaw songwriting tradition and how it connects back to his own family’s history. You can hear that thread running through the record. Songs about late nights, dead end roads, getting back up after life knocks you down. It’s the kind of stuff that sounds cliché on paper but lands different when the guy singing it actually means it.

What I appreciate most about Bill’s Café is that it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to impress anyone. It feels like Willie just opened up a door to where he comes from and let us walk through it with him. That kind of honesty is rare these days, and it’s exactly what makes this record worth your time.
