Lions 19, Vikings 15: Detroit hands Minnesota its first loss behind Gibbs and a late strike from Goff
The last unbeaten team in the NFL is unbeaten no more. The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 on Sunday at Ford Field, riding a career day from Jahmyr Gibbs and a go ahead touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Jameson Williams with 4:35 left.
Minnesota (6-1) led 15-12 in the fourth quarter after Kyler Murray found T.J. Hockenson for an 8 yard touchdown and Jordan Addison added the two point conversion catch. Detroit (5-2) answered with the drive of the game. Goff marched the Lions downfield and hit Williams on a 7 yard score that put Detroit back in front for good. The Vikings failed to pick up a first down on their next possession, and the Lions ran out the final 2:53.
Gibbs carried the offense all afternoon, rushing 23 times for 153 yards and a touchdown. His 30 yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Detroit a 12-7 lead. Goff finished 18 of 25 for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception, his first pick of the season, on a day when Minnesota sacked him four times in the first half alone. Williams caught 4 passes for 70 yards, and Amon-Ra St. Brown had 7 catches for 46 yards.
Murray went 17 of 29 for 210 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, a fourth quarter pick by D.J. Reed. He was also Minnesota’s leading rusher with 35 yards on 4 carries, a sign of how little the Vikings got on the ground, just 81 rushing yards as a team. Addison led the receivers with 3 catches for 66 yards, Hockenson added 4 catches for 58 yards and a score, and Justin Jefferson caught 5 passes for 33 yards and a 1 yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Jake Bates opened the scoring with a 25 yard field goal in the first quarter. Detroit’s win was its third straight. Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was carted off with a neck injury in the fourth quarter and taken to a hospital, the one dark note on a statement afternoon in the NFC North.

Broncos 28, Chiefs 24: Denver scores 15 in the fourth and stands tall at the goal line to take the AFC West lead
The Denver Broncos scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and finished the job with a goal line stand in the final seconds, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High to take over first place in the AFC West.
Kansas City (5-2) led most of the day. Patrick Mahomes threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice in the first quarter, a 73 yard touchdown to running back Emmett Johnson in the second, and a 4 yard score to Noah Gray in the third quarter for a 24-13 lead. Denver (6-2) stayed close behind Wil Lutz field goals of 39 and 45 yards and a 1 yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle on fourth down late in the first half, and Kansas City took a 17-13 lead into halftime on a 45 yard Harrison Butker field goal in the final minute of the second quarter.
The Broncos went three and out three straight times to open the second half, then drove 80 yards in nine plays. Nix hit Nate Adkins for a 2 yard touchdown on fourth and goal with 8:55 left, and Waddle caught the two point conversion to pull Denver within 24-21.
After Butker missed a field goal try, Nix found rookie Jonah Coleman for 51 yards down to the 5 yard line, and Coleman ran it in on the next play just after the two minute warning to give Denver its first lead since the first quarter. Coleman finished as the Broncos’ top rusher and top receiver, running for 41 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and catching 4 passes for 63 yards.
Kansas City had one last chance and nearly took it. Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for 32 yards and Kenneth Walker carried the Chiefs down to the 1 yard line. But Mahomes threw incomplete on second down, Walker was stopped for no gain on third down, a false start pushed Kansas City back, and Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on fourth down as time expired. Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Johnson caught 5 passes for 128 yards for the Chiefs, and Walker ran for 69 yards on 21 carries. Nix went 20 of 32 for 222 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos, and neither team committed a turnover all afternoon.
