The Denver Broncos scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and finished the job with a goal line stand in the final seconds, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High to take over first place in the AFC West.

Kansas City (5-2) led most of the day. Patrick Mahomes threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice in the first quarter, a 73 yard touchdown to running back Emmett Johnson in the second, and a 4 yard score to Noah Gray in the third quarter for a 24-13 lead. Denver (6-2) stayed close behind Wil Lutz field goals of 39 and 45 yards and a 1 yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle on fourth down late in the first half, and Kansas City took a 17-13 lead into halftime on a 45 yard Harrison Butker field goal in the final minute of the second quarter.

The Broncos went three and out three straight times to open the second half, then drove 80 yards in nine plays. Nix hit Nate Adkins for a 2 yard touchdown on fourth and goal with 8:55 left, and Waddle caught the two point conversion to pull Denver within 24-21.

After Butker missed a field goal try, Nix found rookie Jonah Coleman for 51 yards down to the 5 yard line, and Coleman ran it in on the next play just after the two minute warning to give Denver its first lead since the first quarter. Coleman finished as the Broncos’ top rusher and top receiver, running for 41 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and catching 4 passes for 63 yards.

Kansas City had one last chance and nearly took it. Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for 32 yards and Kenneth Walker carried the Chiefs down to the 1 yard line. But Mahomes threw incomplete on second down, Walker was stopped for no gain on third down, a false start pushed Kansas City back, and Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on fourth down as time expired. Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Johnson caught 5 passes for 128 yards for the Chiefs, and Walker ran for 69 yards on 21 carries. Nix went 20 of 32 for 222 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos, and neither team committed a turnover all afternoon.

The New England Patriots trailed by 10 points at halftime in the Miami rain on Sunday. Drake Maye brought them all the way back, throwing touchdown passes of 43 and 48 yards in the second half of a 24-19 win over the Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami (1-6) controlled the first half. Andy Borregales opened the scoring with a 34 yard field goal for New England, but the Dolphins answered with a Zane Gonzalez field goal after rookie Jacob Rodriguez forced an Efton Chism fumble, a 52 yard Gonzalez field goal, and a 1 yard touchdown pass from Malik Willis to Malik Washington with eight seconds left in the half for a 13-3 lead. Maye threw for only 53 yards in the half and took two sacks.

The second half was a different game. Maye completed his first eight passes after the break. His 43 yard strike to Kyle Williams, first ruled incomplete and then overturned on review, cut the lead to 13-10 in the third quarter. Maye then faked a pitch and ran 2 yards for a touchdown with 59 seconds left in the quarter to put New England (5-3) in front for good.

The defense handed him the chance to finish it. Willis had a pass deflect off the helmet of defensive lineman DaQuan Jones and into the hands of safety Kevin Byard for Miami’s only turnover of the game, and two plays later Maye found DeMario Douglas, who split two defenders and went 48 yards for a touchdown and a 24-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Willis hit rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. for a 35 yard touchdown with 2:04 left, but the two point conversion failed. New England recovered the onside kick, and Rhamondre Stevenson’s five yard run on third and 5 let Maye kneel out the clock. Maye finished 16 of 20 for 199 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, his fifth straight game with multiple touchdown passes. Stevenson carried 18 times for 77 yards, and Douglas caught 3 passes for 76 yards. Willis went 21 of 32 for 211 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, and Ollie Gordon added 69 yards on 19 carries for the Dolphins. The Patriots did it all with receiver A.J. Brown sidelined by a knee injury.
