The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did something on Sunday that no NFL team had done in more than 50 years. They beat the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 at a drenched Raymond James Stadium without completing a single pass.

Baker Mayfield, playing his second game back from a fractured right thumb, went 0 for 3. Tampa Bay became the first team to win with zero completions since the Buffalo Bills on September 29, 1974, when Joe Ferguson went 0 for 2 in a 16-12 win over the Jets.

In driving rain, the Buccaneers (3-5) simply ran the ball downhill. They piled up a team record 324 rushing yards on 56 carries. Bucky Irving set career highs with 170 yards on 27 carries and scored the game’s only touchdown on a 4 yard run late in the third quarter. Kenny Gainwell also set a career high with 140 yards on 25 carries. Chase McLaughlin did the rest of the scoring with field goals of 46, 34 and 42 yards, and he is now 19 for 19 on field goals this season.

Atlanta (3-5) never got its footing in the wet conditions. Michael Penix Jr. went 8 of 24 for 125 yards and threw four interceptions, two of them to Alex Anzalone. Nick Parrish intercepted Penix on fourth down at the Tampa Bay 17, and Zyon McCollum picked him off at the 14. Nick Folk missed a 53 yard field goal on the game’s opening series, and the Falcons finished with 224 total yards. Bijan Robinson led Atlanta with 76 rushing yards on 19 carries, and the Falcons’ longest play was a 76 yard catch by Jahan Dotson late in the fourth quarter that still ended in a turnover on downs.

The shutout was Tampa Bay’s second straight win and moved the Buccaneers within a half game of first place in the NFC South. With zero completions, Tampa Bay had no receiving leader on the day.

The Denver Broncos scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and finished the job with a goal line stand in the final seconds, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High to take over first place in the AFC West.

Kansas City (5-2) led most of the day. Patrick Mahomes threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice in the first quarter, a 73 yard touchdown to running back Emmett Johnson in the second, and a 4 yard score to Noah Gray in the third quarter for a 24-13 lead. Denver (6-2) stayed close behind Wil Lutz field goals of 39 and 45 yards and a 1 yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle on fourth down late in the first half, and Kansas City took a 17-13 lead into halftime on a 45 yard Harrison Butker field goal in the final minute of the second quarter.

The Broncos went three and out three straight times to open the second half, then drove 80 yards in nine plays. Nix hit Nate Adkins for a 2 yard touchdown on fourth and goal with 8:55 left, and Waddle caught the two point conversion to pull Denver within 24-21.

After Butker missed a field goal try, Nix found rookie Jonah Coleman for 51 yards down to the 5 yard line, and Coleman ran it in on the next play just after the two minute warning to give Denver its first lead since the first quarter. Coleman finished as the Broncos’ top rusher and top receiver, running for 41 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and catching 4 passes for 63 yards.

Kansas City had one last chance and nearly took it. Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for 32 yards and Kenneth Walker carried the Chiefs down to the 1 yard line. But Mahomes threw incomplete on second down, Walker was stopped for no gain on third down, a false start pushed Kansas City back, and Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on fourth down as time expired. Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Johnson caught 5 passes for 128 yards for the Chiefs, and Walker ran for 69 yards on 21 carries. Nix went 20 of 32 for 222 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos, and neither team committed a turnover all afternoon.
