For nearly a full half on Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams could not buy a first down. Then they scored 21 unanswered points and beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24-9 at SoFi Stadium, sending their stadium roommates to 0-7.

The Rams (4-4) opened the game with five straight three and outs and did not record a first down until Matthew Stafford hit Tutu Atwell for 40 yards with 1:26 left in the first half. By then the Chargers (0-7) led 9-3 behind Cameron Dicker field goals of 34, 46 and 41 yards. The only early Rams points came after Quentin Lake intercepted Justin Herbert and returned the ball 45 yards to set up a Brandon McManus field goal.

Atwell’s catch flipped the game. Stafford found Puka Nacua for 13 yards down to the 1, and Kyren Williams scored with 19 seconds left in the half to give the Rams a 10-9 lead. Los Angeles opened the second half with a 79 yard drive capped by Blake Corum’s 23 yard touchdown run, and after Trent McDuffie intercepted Herbert, Stafford hit Nacua on an 18 yard screen for a touchdown and a 24-9 lead with 3:48 left in the third quarter.

Stafford finished 17 of 25 for 157 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Corum ran for a game high 73 yards on 11 carries, Williams added 56 yards on 16 carries, and Nacua caught 11 passes for 80 yards. The Rams ran for 129 yards as a team after managing just 10 rushing yards in the entire first half.

Herbert went 24 of 32 for 257 yards but threw two interceptions and no touchdowns, and the Chargers failed to reach the end zone for the second straight game. Ladd McConkey led them with 4 catches for 86 yards, including a long Hail Mary grab on the final play of the first half that came up just short of the goal line, and the Chargers have now gone 27 straight drives without a touchdown. The Rams sealed the win by stopping the Chargers on fourth down at the 24 yard line and holding the ball for nearly seven minutes late in the fourth quarter. It was the Rams’ second straight victory and their first back to back wins of the season.

The Denver Broncos scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and finished the job with a goal line stand in the final seconds, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High to take over first place in the AFC West.

Kansas City (5-2) led most of the day. Patrick Mahomes threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice in the first quarter, a 73 yard touchdown to running back Emmett Johnson in the second, and a 4 yard score to Noah Gray in the third quarter for a 24-13 lead. Denver (6-2) stayed close behind Wil Lutz field goals of 39 and 45 yards and a 1 yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle on fourth down late in the first half, and Kansas City took a 17-13 lead into halftime on a 45 yard Harrison Butker field goal in the final minute of the second quarter.

The Broncos went three and out three straight times to open the second half, then drove 80 yards in nine plays. Nix hit Nate Adkins for a 2 yard touchdown on fourth and goal with 8:55 left, and Waddle caught the two point conversion to pull Denver within 24-21.

After Butker missed a field goal try, Nix found rookie Jonah Coleman for 51 yards down to the 5 yard line, and Coleman ran it in on the next play just after the two minute warning to give Denver its first lead since the first quarter. Coleman finished as the Broncos’ top rusher and top receiver, running for 41 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and catching 4 passes for 63 yards.

Kansas City had one last chance and nearly took it. Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for 32 yards and Kenneth Walker carried the Chiefs down to the 1 yard line. But Mahomes threw incomplete on second down, Walker was stopped for no gain on third down, a false start pushed Kansas City back, and Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes on fourth down as time expired. Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Johnson caught 5 passes for 128 yards for the Chiefs, and Walker ran for 69 yards on 21 carries. Nix went 20 of 32 for 222 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos, and neither team committed a turnover all afternoon.
